The vast majority of ISO standards are highly specific to a particular product, material, or process. However, both ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 are known as generic management standards (Generic means that the same standards can be applied to any organisation, large or small. whatever its product, and whether it is a business enterprise, a public administration, or a governmental department). ISO 9000 has become an international reference for quality managemenr requirements in business-to-business dealings, and ISO 14000 is for environmental management reuirements.
The ISO 9000 family is primarily concerned with “quality management”. This means what the organisation does to fulfil the customer’s quality requirements and applicable regulatory requirements, while aiming to enhance customer satisfaction, and achieve continual improvementof its performance in pursuit of these objectives.
The ISO 14000 family is primarily concerned with “environmental management”. This means what the organisation does to minimise harmful effects on the environment caused by it activities, and to achieve continual improvement of its environmental performance.
Both ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 concern the way an organisation goes about its work, and not directly the result of this work. In other words, they both concern processess, and not products.

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) was established in 1946 in Geneva, switzerland, where it is still based. ISO is an association of National Standards Bodies of more than 150 countries. ISO is a specialised agency for standardisation. The primary objective of ISO is coordination and unification of international standards. ISO employs a system of technical committees, sub-committees and working groups to develop internatinal standards. Besides the national standard bodeis, ISO permits other international organisations that develop standards to participate in its work, by accepting them as Liaison members. ISO works in accordance with an agreed set of rules of procedures, the ISO directives, which also includes requirements on the presentation of standards. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national standards body of india represented on ISO.

It is learned that the essence of the number of ‘quality’ definitions is to provide company’s operating systems which promote conformance to specifications. Also the ever-increasing pressure to provide better quality of products led to the adoption of the concept of quality systems. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defined the term quality system as follows: “The quality systems are the organizational structures, responsibilities, procedures, processes and resources for implementing quality management”. The quality system should function in such a manner as to provide proper confidence that the system is well understood and effective, the products or services actually do satisfy customer expectations, the emphasis is placed on problem-prevention rather than dependance on detection, after occurrence.
